Introduction

Molecular makers are useful tools for developing detailed linkage maps of species that previously were very poorly mapped. These maps have obvious utility for the identification of markers linked to genes of agronomic or horticultural importance. Beyond this practical utility, molecular markers and molecular maps can provide detailed information regarding:

  • the structure of the genome of a species
  • the evolutionary relatedness of species within a family
  • sequence rearrangements during evolution
  • the relationship between physical and genetic distances linkage drag
